During the next few weeks, the grade three students will be participating in many conversations about the Garfield comic strip. This popular genre proves to be an engaging and motivating unit of study.
We will begin by looking at the conventions used in comic creation such as direction, speech and thought bubbles, voice, visual effects and onomatopoeia and identifying them in a variety of Garfield comics. Next, the students will visit the award winning Professor Garfield educational website which was developed by Jim Davis (author of Garfield) and Ball State University. The favourite activity of most students is "The Reading Ring" where you challenge "Dr. Stripp, The Scrambler Supreme" to a match unscrambling comics and answering comprehension and vocabulary questions. The entire website offers numerous educational activities.
The students will be writing their own Garfield comic using the Garfield Comics Lab. We hope to share a few of their creations in the coming weeks.
